Chukha Dzongkha Annual Schools Taekwondo Championships Report

7th–9th September 2017

The 2017 Chukha Dzongkha Annual Schools Taekwondo Championships were hosted by Darla Middle Secondary School (MSS) in Darla. The event was organized by the Chukha Dzongkha Taekwondo (TKD) Association in collaboration with the Bhutan Olympic Committee (BOC) over three days, from 7th to 9th September.

On a cloudy and wet September weekend, the Darla Multipurpose Hall (MPH) became a hive of activity for the championships. This annual event in the Dzongkhag was previously held at Pashikha Central School. The theme of this year’s meet was: “Say no to drugs and be a responsible citizen; play sports, protect the environment, be healthy and live a happy life.”

Over 380 competitors from 18 schools, along with 10 technical teachers and 28 coaches, took part. This was the largest junior and senior Chukha Dzongkha Championships from Chukha Dzongkhag and Phuntsholing Thromde to date. The participating schools were:

All students reported to Darla MSS in the early evening of 6th September 2017. For many, the championships were a dream—where hopes and aspirations ran high, and some were dashed. The participants experienced a rollercoaster of emotions, with many coming within a hair’s breadth of victory.

By 5:30 PM on 6th September, all participants, coaches, escort teachers, and teachers of Darla MSS gathered in the MPH for a briefing and introduction. The following points were thoroughly briefed and discussed:

· The principal of Darla MSS welcomed the participants and guests, then introduced the responsible teachers of Darla MSS for the conduct of the event.

· Official and escort teachers from different schools were introduced.

· Health and sanitation briefing – Mr. Gopal briefed students and guests on school sanitation and health facilities, including first aid. He focused on junk food‑free schools, proper toilet use, and toilet cleaning.

· Mess management – Mrs. VP shared information about the mess and meal times, inviting any complaints to be brought directly to her.

· Campus rules and regulations – Mr. Karma Therchen clearly instructed the norms and rules of the hostel and campus. The rules were displayed on logistic doors and at strategic points around the school.

· Taekwondo rules briefing – BOC officials briefed the participants on the rules and regulations of taekwondo.

· The briefing was followed by dinner for all participants and guests.

Day One (7th September)

Each day featured over 157 matches, with more than 300 competitors taking part in individual events. The championships started promptly at 7:30 AM on Thursday with event markings. Matches continued until 10:30 PM on the first day, during which the first round from various categories was contested.

The three‑day championships at Darla MPH kicked off with great excitement and awe. The first match featured junior players: Mr. Tshering Gyeltshen (Phuntsholing LSS) versus Mr. Kelden Yoezar (Sonamgang MSS). There was stiff opposition from the young Kelden, but he unfortunately lost to Tshering by 3 points. The two sparred playfully for around three minutes.

Day Two (8th September)


On day two, the main participants—both junior and senior boys and girls—began at 7:00 AM. It was good to see all participants gathered in the hall before the matches, including several national team squad members in action. The semi-final matches were played on this day.


The competition started with the senior boys’ category: Mr. Nidup Dorji from Pashikha Central School versus Mr. Kuenga Tandin from Phuntsholing LSS in their semi-final. To heighten the intensity, spectators cheered for their schools from all four sides of the hall. With the crowd close to the action, every match was watched by an expectant audience of fellow team members.


Day two saw intense sparring, with many competitors bursting out of the blocks, experiencing both victories and defeats. Several matches were decided by golden points, proving that the competitors were well-matched and tough opponents for one another.

Day Three (9th September)


The third day began with great thrill and hype, as it was the final day of competition. Many predicted stiff and tough fights among the competitors—and it certainly delivered. A chorus of cheers and cries from the spectators echoed throughout the hall for the entire day.


All matches were completed by lunchtime, with a few bouts reserved for the guests and the chief guest of the day. At around 1:00 PM, the Dasho Dzongrab of Chukha Dzongkhag, the chief guest of the closing day, graced the occasion. He was accompanied by other dignitaries from DGPC, the Dzongkhag, the Dungkhag, and guests from various organizations.


The program began with a Marchang ceremony, followed by speeches from the principal of Darla MSS and the guest of honor. The Dasho Dzongrab underlined the importance of holding such an event every year in the Dzongkhag. Following the speeches, four final matches from different categories were held, with competitors vying for gold and silver.


The third day concluded with the awarding of prizes by the chief guest to the winners. By 3:00 PM, the program ended smoothly with everything in place. By 4:00 PM, all students had departed Darla school campus on buses to their respective schools.


The competition was extremely well run over the three days. Darla MSS would like to thank the BOC officials and all teachers for organizing this year’s championship and for providing their services throughout the event. Special thanks also go to the Chief Coach, as well as all referees, judges, and table officials, who worked tirelessly over the three days to ensure the championships were a huge success. Finally, thanks to all the governing bodies within the Bhutan Taekwondo Federation for supporting this event and ensuring its success.
